UAB PARTNERSHIP

UAB Partnership

Feb. 10, 2017 ⋅ Categories: Dev Blog

THROUGH A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM (UAB), WE WILL LEVERAGE OUR COMBINED EXPERTISE IN NEUROSCIENCE, ENGINEERING, AND MATERIALS SCIENCE TO DEVELOP FUTURE HELMET TECHNOLOGIES.

WHY HAS VICIS PARTNERED WITH UAB?

When our team visited UAB last year, we were surprised and encouraged to learn their approach to helmet engineering mirrored ours.

UAB is an internationally renowned research university and one of the leading academic medical centers in the United States. Their engineering and material science programs compliment VICIS’ strengths and reinforce our leadership in the development of advanced helmet technology.

Much of UAB’s research will be driven by Dean Sicking, Ph.D. and his outstanding team of engineers.

WHO IS DEAN SICKING?

It’s not often ESPN writes a story about a mechanical engineering professor, but that’s exactly what happened when UAB recruited Dean Sicking from University of Nebraska in 2013.  An energy management expert, Dean has been a highway safety pioneer for several decades, but in 2011 he redirected his considerable talents solely to the pursuit of sports safety innovation.

Dean is well known for his design of interstate guardrails and the Safer Barrier used in NASCAR courses today. Since the Safer Barriers installation over a decade ago, there has not been a single wall-crash fatality.

According to Sicking, “Players have gotten bigger, faster and stronger, and they’re delivering bigger blows to the head…a redesigned helmet with impact reduction at the core of the technology can help make the game safer.”

WHAT’S FIRST FOR THE VICIS AND UAB PARTNERSHIP?

Our ZERO1 helmet was designed for elite athletes. Our work with UAB will help us develop a portfolio of helmets and associated technologies to protect players at all levels of football, from Pop Warner to the NFL.

This partnership will add “additional horsepower in neuroscience, engineering, and materials science which will help VICIS continue to introduce advancements in helmet technology for the benefit of this great sport and the kids who play it” according to VICIS CEO and Co-Founder, Dave Marver.

We are excited to work closely with UAB and will keep you posted as we develop cool and useful technologies together.
